Words of Wisdom

Some of my favorite sayings:
  1. Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning. Mahatma Gandhi

  2. You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore. Christopher Columbus

  3. Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. Thomas A Edison

  4. Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. Muhammad Ali

  5. So many of our dreams at first seems impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable. Christopher Reeve

  6. Efficiency is doing things right. Effectiveness is doing the right things. Peter Drucker

  7. Formal education will make you a living. Self education will make you a fortune. Jim Rohn

  8. You must be the change you want to see in the world. Mahatma Gandhi

  9. Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. Ralph Waldo Emerson

  10. It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without [necessarily] accepting it. Aristotle

The Comment Game

It's time to play the comment game again. We are in our boat for the weekend, enjoying a private island called Grindstone Joe's.

Here's how it goes: I'll start the game off at the bottom of this post by choosing two words or phrases, like coffee or tea, and which ever one you prefer you choose. You can also explain why. When you have done that you do two new words or phrases for the next commenter to choose from. Feel free to come back as often as you like. Just have fun. If someone derails the game will one of you put it back on track? Thanks.

The Year is 1951

Since I was born in 1951 I decided to see some of the things that happened the year of my birth.

1951 unemployment dipped to 3.3% in the US and new roads were built to take the ever increasing numbers of cars including the New Jersey Turnpike.

Children were given more than any other time in previous history with guitar lessons and sets of Encyclopedias to improve their minds.

The average family income was $3,700 per year and people had money to spend so cars became more luxurious and had more powerful engines with options for two tone paint, during this time things like turn signals were still an extra and most drivers still used hand signals to tell other drivers which way they were turning.

Europe continued to export many cars to the US including Volkswagen's and Austin's.

Cost of Living 1951
  • Yearly Inflation Rate USA 7.88%
  • Average cost of new house $9,000.00
  • Average wages per year $3,510.00
  • Cost of a gallon of gas 19 cents
  • Average cost of a new car $1,500.00
  • Loaf of bread 16 cents
  • Pound of Hamburger Meat 50 cents
  • Bacon per pound 52 cents
  • Eggs per dozen 24 cents
  • Water heater jacket (asbestos) $4.59
  • Baby diapers (cotton) from $2.79
  • Children's tricycle from $14.00.

Marriage Lessons

On their 40th wedding anniversary and during the banquet celebrating it, Tom was asked to give his friends a brief account of the benefits of a marriage of such long duration.

"Tell us Tom, just what is it you have learned from all those wonderful years with your wife?"

Tom responds, "Well, I've learned that marriage is the best teacher of all. It teaches you loyalty, forbearance, meekness, self-restraint, forgiveness --and a great many other qualities you wouldn't have needed if you'd stayed single."

Question Time

I've been tagged by Judy of Judy H-J's Thoughts - A Twinless Twin to answer some questions. Since I like Judy very much I'm going to play along.

1.How long have you been blogging?

My blog says 2009 in my archives, but I've actually been blogging since 2007. I did some major housecleaning and probably shouldn't have.

2. Are you a procrastinator or do you take care of things right away?

I can wait out the best of them. I used to be so on top of everything and then in retirement I asked myself why. Never got an answer.

3. If you have siblings, are you close?

Everyone that knows me well, knows that I don't want anything to do with my brother and why. My sister is my best friend.

4. What's the best thing about your job? The worst?

I'm retired, so I don't have any of these issues anymore. Everyday is either Saturday or Sunday.

5. If you had $1,000 to spend on anything you wanted, what would you buy?

I'd probably put that money in the bank.

6. How long has it been since you visited your hometown?

Hubby and I visited Tillamook Oregon in the late 90s. It was before we got married and I wanted him to see where I was born and raised. He did the same for me by taking me to where he was born and grew up.

7. Have you decorated for Easter/Spring? please share pictures.

I don't decorate for anything but Christmas, and some years back it was a really big deal. It would take me days to get the house decorated for Christmas. Not so much anymore.

8. Do you sleep with a fan on?

I sleep with either the heater or the air conditioner. We have a whole-house fan, but no other fans in our home.

9. The beach or the mountains?

Beach and on a boat too. Anyplace there is water is where we love to be. Nothing like it at all even though I enjoy the mountains too.

10. If you had to choose only one which would you pick: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or blogging?

Blogging hands down. I deactivated my Facebook account and rarely go on Twitter. I've not even looked at Pinterest and don't intend to.

11. When shopping, do you use coupons or shop around for the best deal?

I'm terrible. I go into the store and put whatever I want into the cart and then go check out. Rarely do we use coupons. I will look for the best deals though. If I know something is on sale at a store I'm in I will certainly go find that sale item.

Gomer

The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, so Gomer - who was not exactly the sharpest nail in the bucket went in to try out for the job.

"Okay," the sheriff drawled, "Gomer, what is 1 and 1?"

"11" he replied.

The sheriff thought to himself, "That's not what I meant, but he's right."

"What two days of the week start with the letter 'T'?"

"Today and tomorrow."

He was again surprised that Gomer supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself.

"Now Gomer, listen carefully: Who killed Abraham Lincoln?"

Gomer looked a little surprised himself, then thought really hard for a minute and finally admitted, "I don't know."

"Well, why don't you go home and work on that one for a while?"

So, Gomer wandered over to the pool hall where his pals were waiting to hear the results of the interview.

Gomer was exultant. "It went great! First day on the job and I'm already working on a murder case!"

The Burglar

A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before.

"You'll get your chance in court." said the Desk Sergeant.

"No, no no!" said the man. "I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I've been trying to do that for years!"

All I Need to Know About Life
I Learned from the Easter Bunny

Don't put all of your eggs in one basket.
Walk softly and carry a big carrot.
Everyone needs a friend who is all ears.
There's no such thing as too much candy.
All work and no play can make you a basket case.
A cute little tail attracts a lot of attention.
Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day.
Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits.
Some body parts should be floppy.
Keep your paws off other people's jellybeans.
The grass is always greener in someone else's basket.
An Easter bonnet can tame even the wildest hare.
To show your true colors you have to come out of your shell.
The best things in life are still sweet and gooey!
Happy Easter!

Close Shave

An old man walks into the barbershop for a shave and a haircut, but he tells the barber he can't get all his whiskers off because his cheeks are wrinkled from age.

The barber gets a little wooden ball from a cup on the shelf and tells him to put it inside his cheek to spread out the skin.

When he's finished, the old man tells the barber that was the cleanest shave he's had in years, but he wanted to know what would have happened if he had swallowed the little ball.

The barber replied, "Just bring it back tomorrow like everyone else does."

The Haircut

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you; I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you; I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen doughnuts waiting for him at his door.

Then an MP (Member of Parliament) came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The MP was very happy and left the shop. The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen MPs lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

Both politicians and nappies need to be changed often and for the same reason!

Irish Sausage

Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream 'racism' these days.

A customer asked, "In what aisle could I find the Irish sausage?"

The assistant asks, "Are you Irish?"

The guy, clearly offended, says, "Yes I am ... but let me ask you something.

"If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian?

Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German?

Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish?

Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican?

Or if I asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?"

The assistant says, "No, I probably wouldn't."

The guy says, "Well then, because I asked for Irish sausage, why did you ask me if I'm Irish?"

The assistant replied, "Because you're in the Sears Department Store."

Fishing Trip

Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat to the van and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.

I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back; now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is
terrible."

My loving wife of 5 years replied, "And, can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?"

And that's how the fight started.
